Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has paid tribute to Danny Welbeck after his impressive performance in the 1-1 draw against Real Madrid.
The England duo flanked Robin Van Persie in a 4-3-3 formation for the Red Devils at the Santiago Bernabeu, and it was a goal from the less illustrious forward which put the visitors in-front.
Welbeck out-muscled Sergio Ramos at a 20th minute corner, and met Rooney’s delivery on the edge of the six-yard box to put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side ahead.
And, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo headed home an equaliser ten minutes later, United held on for an encouraging draw in the Spanish capital.
Rooney felt it was a ‘solid’ performance, and is already looking forward to the second leg in three weeks time at Old Trafford.
He wrote on his official Facebook page: “Solid performance by the lads. Pleased we got the away goal… Danny (Welbeck) had a top game! Looking forward to the return leg at Old Trafford!”
Next on the agenda for Manchester United is an FA Cup clash against Reading before Premier League matches against QPR and Norwich City. The clash with Madrid follows on March 5th.
