Robin van Persie rues missed chances in Madrid
Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie admits he should have scored at Real Madrid
Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie was left to rue missed chances after his side’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Danny Welbeck put the Red Devils ahead before old boy Cristiano Ronaldo levelled with a towering header ten minutes later.
That’s the way is stayed, although the Dutchman had chances to grab a second away goal for the visitors, hitting the crossbar with a fierce right-foot drive that was saved by Diego Lopez.
Van Persie then scuffed a volley from eight-yards less than a minute later, before seeing his low shot across goal tipped round the post in injury-time.
"I had three (chances) in the second half, especially the one just after I hit the bar. That was a big chance. I should have put that one in. I just slightly mis-kicked it, didn't hit it properly," said the former Arsenal hitman, according to The Independent.
“With a bit of luck it could have gone in but they didn't and in the dying seconds the keeper made a really good save - I was counting on that one to go in."
Despite missing his big chances, Van Persie believes Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are well placed to progress to the quarter-finals, with an away goal potentially decisive ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford in three weeks time.
"We had a couple of good chances and I think if you'd said we would play out a 1-1 before the game, most of us would take it," the 29-year-old added.
"Away from home it's a good result. For the people who watched that game, they've seen chances on both sides and I think it was a great game to watch."
United face Reading next in the FA Cup on Monday night, before league games against QPR and Norwich City. The return leg in Europe’s premier club competition follows the clash with the Canaries.
