Mats Hummels scored a late header to earn Borussia Dortmund a 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 encounter.
Having led twice, through captain Darijo Srna and Douglas Costa, the Ukrainians were unable to secure a lead for the return to Germany, as Dortmund grabbed two away goals through Robert Lewandowski and defender Hummels late on.
On a freezing night at the Donbass Arena, it was Dortmund who started brightest, with the home side looking rusty on their first competitive appearance since early December following a winter break.
The visitors created a number of chances as they looked to break the deadlock, with Hummels coming closest striking the bar.
But it was Shakhtar who took the lead after half an hour, when Srna curled home a 25-yard free kick that eluded Roman Weidenfeller.
Dortmund hit back before the break through Lewandowski, with the striker’s equaliser containing an element of good fortune, as he wrong-footed the home defence after miscontrolling the ball, before finishing empathically.
The visitors began the second half in a similar fashion and almost took the lead through Marco Reus, but the German saw his effort blocked.
Despite long spell of possession, Dortmund found themselves behind once again as Shakhtar hit them on the counter.
A long ball forward from Dimitro Chygrynskiy wasn’t dealt with by Hummels, allowing Costa to bring the ball down and unleash a superb strike past Weidenfeller.
With Shakhtar closing in on an important first-leg advantage, Dortmund grabbed a deserved equaliser three minutes from time as Hummels atoned for his previous error, converting a header from a Marcel Schmelzer corner.
The draw sees the Bundesliga side hold a slight advantage going into the return leg at the Westfalenstadion on March 5th, with Shakhtar knowing they have to score in Dortmund if they are to progress to the quarter-finals.
A sour note prior to kick off saw a minutes silence held following news that a plane carrying supporters to the game left the runway when attempting to land in Donetsk, killing at least five people and injuring a dozen more.
