Video: Copa Libertadores star punches opponent in the face
Emilio Zelaya involved in on-pitch assault after punching Copa Libertadores opponent in the face
Arsenal de Sarandi forward Emilio Zelaya could face a retrospective ban after he was implicated in an on-pitch assault in Thursday's 2-1 Copa Libertadores defeat against Bolivian champions The Strongest.
The Argentine star featured in La Paz as a second-half substitute for the tournament debutants, who finished the game with nine men, after he was shown a straight red card for a tackle from behind, after only six minutes on the field.
In the aftermath that followed his sending off, Zelaya was captured punching an opponent in the face, prompting further altercations with players from both sides, while his individual action left the receiving player flattened on the ground in agony.
Alejandro Chumacero had earlier given The Strongest the lead, with a shot from outside the area, in what turned out to be a tightly-contested affair at Estadio Hernando Siles, which is located 3,600metres above sea level.
Dario Benedetto levelled for the Argentine outfit with a free-kick three minutes after the interval, as Arsenal started to dominate proceedings.
However, it all went horribly wrong as tempers started to flare after Damian Perez was sent off for a second bookable offence, before substitute Zelaya was given his marching orders for a disgraceful tackle.
Luis Perez took advantage of Arsenal's two-man deficit by netting the winner seven minutes from time in the Group Three match, that will sadly be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
