Arsenal & Manchester United in transfer battle over £10m Spanish stopper

Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Spanish goalkeeper Victor Valdes, according to reports.

The Sunday Mirror claims Arsene Wenger has switched his sights to the Barcelona keeper, after failing to sign striker David Villa from the same club during the January transfer window.

And, in a bid to add some competition for Polish stopper Wojciech Szczesny, the Gunners chief is opting to pursue the 31-year-old after looking at a number of players in the position over the past six months.

Valdes is out of contract at the Nou Camp next year, and has decided against signing a new contract with the Catalan giants. The Mirror report claims these factors mean Arsenal should easily be able to afford a transfer fee for the La Liga star, whilst The Sun claims the player will cost £10million.

However, the Emirates Stadium outfit will face competition for the player’s signature, with their great Premier League rivals also keen on Valdes.

The Daily Express claimed last week that Manchester United were ‘waiting in the wings’ to bring the 11-cap international to Old Trafford at the end of the season, amidst concerns over David de Gea.

De Gea impressed for the Red Devils in the Champions League against Real Madrid last week, but the paper reports that Sir Alex Ferguson still has concerns over the young Spaniard.
