Andrea Pirlo showed against England at Euro 2012 how cool and calm you need to be to hit a panenka penalty in a high-pressure situration.

Well this weekend saw an example of the risk involved in attempting it and how silly a player can look when it doesn’t come off.

Iliyan Micanski of FC Ingolstadt was left red-faced when the curse of overconfidence befell him when he stepped up to take a last minute penalty against Union Berlin on Saturday.

The Bundesliga 2. match was tied at 1-1 going into injury time when the penalty was conceded.

Micanski stepped up to hit the spot-kick that would win his side the three points, but gave his panenka a little too much juice and watched in horror as it hit the crossbar, bounced into the air and was easily caught by home goalkeeper Daniel Haas.

Watch Micanski’s embarrassing fail above.
