Liverpool are set to fight it out with Premier League rivals Sunderland and Swansea City for Africa Cup of Nations winner Efe Ambrose.
According to The Scottish Sun, the Celtic defender is set to become the subject of a transfer tussle between Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers, his former club and former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill.
Ambrose was a key component in Nigeria’s AFCON triumph at the start of this month and his appearance did not go unnoticed by Liverpool it seems.
However, the 24-year-old was criticised for mistakes leading to two of Juventus’ goal in the 3-0 loss at Celtic Park in their Champions League last 16 first leg.
Ambrose only returned from South Africa the day before the match and suffered severe lapses of concentration in the games.
Liverpool will be buoyant after the 5-0 thrashing of Swansea City in the Premier League on Sunday but will be looking for another centre-back after Jamie Carragher announced his retirement at the end of the season.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon admitted Ambrose had admirers but insisted the likes of Liverpool would have to look elsewhere.
“Efe has got a lot of suitors but he wants to play here,” he said.
