Lucas Leiva has admitted that Liverpool's lack of consistency could cost them a top-four finish this season, but urged the Anfield giants to give it their all to finish the campaign on a high.

The Brazilian international’s comments came following the Merseyside club’s 5-0 success over Swansea City on Sunday at Anfield, which capped a rather topsy-turvy week for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

Back-to-back defeats preceded Sunday's success, with a 2-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion compounded further by Zenit St Petersburg's win over the Reds in the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie.

And with the team now nine points adrift of the Champions League places, having played a game more than their rivals, the 26-year-old feels that consistency would be the key to Liverpool's chances of finishing higher up in the table.

Lucas said that the Reds have been guilty of failing to build a winning momentum. However, he called upon them to give it their all in order to compete for European places.

"It's difficult to explain. As players you get frustrated a lot of times as well," said Lucas.

"When you think we are starting to get some good momentum we have a defeat and a setback.

"But there is still time to get that consistency. Our league position is not great but we must keep fighting and see what happens.

"If we can get that consistency then we can finish this season on a high."

Liverpool currently occupy seventh spot in the Premier League table, having mustered up 39 points from their 27 Premier League matches to date.
