Liverpool and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Lyon defender Dejan Lovren this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, both Anfield and Stamford Bridge are readying bods for the 23-year-old in a bit to replace their ageing defenders.

Captain John Terry is now 32 years old and Lovren could be seen as a long-term replacement for him, especially as David Luiz has looked so impressive in a defensive midfield position.

Meanwhile, Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher recently announced his plans to retire at the end of this season after first team opportunities became limited.

Losing the experienced centre-half will leave Reds manager Brendan Rodgers with only Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel as experienced players in that position.

Sebastian Coates is also on the books but he 22-year-old has struggled to impress since he moved to Liverpool from Nacional in Uruguay nearly two years ago.

We’re it to become a straight fight between Chelsea and Liverpool for the Lyon defender, Roman Abramovich’s greater spending power and the possibility of Champions League football could prove decisive.

Both sides are playing their Europa League last 32 second legs on Thursday evening; Chelsea go into the clash with Sparta Prague at Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 lead form the first leg.

Liverpool face an uphill task when they welcome Zenit St Petersburg to Anfield, as the Russian side have a 2-0 advantage from the first leg last week.
