Chelsea are planning a surprise summer move for Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, according to Spanish publication, AS.
The 22-year-old has emerged as a surprise target for the Blues, as they consider the sale of on-loan stopper Thibaut Courtois to Atletico Madrid, in an attempt to tie up a deal for long-term striker target Radamel Falcao.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is keen to bring the Colombian hit-man to Stamford Bridge, and although the Russian regards Courtois as a potential successor to Petr Cech, he is now weighing up the club's transfer options.
Yesterday, talkSPORT reported that Chelsea could knock £15million off of Falcao's £45million valuation, by agreeing to sell the Belgian goalkeeper to Los Rojiblancos, so impressive have Courtois's performances been at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, during his second season-long loan spell there.
De Gea, meanwhile, has made an unconvincing start to life at Old Trafford, since signing for Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in a £17million deal in June 2011.
However, that hasn't deterred interest from Chelsea, and a host of other top European clubs, although Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly reiterated his belief that the Spain U21 international will succeed in England with Manchester United.
AS journalist Manolete questions the validity of Ferguson's public backing of De Gea, though, writing: "De Gea fails to convince the Scot and even Chelsea would be very interested and would accept the former Atletico star."
