Manchester City defender Kolo Toure has revealed that his side need to win a trophy this season, to ensure that manager Roberto Mancini can keep hold of his job.
Reports suggest that if Roberto Mancini fails to land a trophy this season, with the FA Cup looking likely to be his only possibility, then Serie A side AS Roma are prepared to offer Mancini an escape route.
Mancini is under pressure at City as his side trail league leaders Manchester United by 12 points. Mancini’s side have also been knocked out of the Champions League group stage for the second year running and they fell at the first hurdle in the Capital One Cup, after a 4-2 extra time defeat to Aston Villa.
However, Mancini remains positive about remaining as City manager next season, although he may well be interested in returning to his native Italy where he previously led Inter Milan to great success.
When discussing the significance of winning a trophy this season, Toure toldThe Mirror: “It is very important for the players, for us to win, because that will help the manager to be here, for sure. But even for us, we don’t want to go a season without winning something. That would be hard for City now.
"We’ve delivered and we need to maintain that by winning trophies.
“Always, always, for a team like City, it’s difficult to go for a season without winning one trophy.
“For us, the F.A. Cup is really important, and the league as well, because we want to maintain this trophy.
“For us it is very important because, when you win the Premier League for the first time, you want to get to keep it. It is very difficult at the moment but the season isn’t finished and for us we’re looking to the next game and to try to win it.”
Mancini signed a new five-year contract with City last season, however if he is to fail this season by not delivering a trophy, then the owners may quickly run out of patience with the Italian. Mancini was spotted in Genoa last week as he watched AS Roma against Sampordia, which further intensified speculation about a possible move to the Italian giants.
Current AS Roma manager, Aurelio Andreazzoli, is only under contract until the end of the season which may well open the door for Mancini to jump ship to Italy.
