Manchester United are interested in signing ‘the new Andrea Pirlo’ Marco Verratti, according to the Daily Express.

The report claims Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to bring more midfielders to Old Trafford in the summer, with Paul Scholes set to confirm his retirement again and Nani expected to leave.

The Manchester United manager has made enquiries about Verratti, according to the Italy international’s agent.

“Many Italian clubs have contacted me to know the status of Verratti, but they are not the only ones to have done so,” Donato di Campli reportedly told Le 10 Sport.

“Big clubs in Spain and England are also interested in him. Barcelona and Manchester United are in the front row.

“Sir Alex Ferguson really likes Marco."

However, the 20-year-old is currently playing his trade for Ligue 1 big-spenders PSG and is playing under the man that hailed him as the “new Pirlo”, Carlo Ancelotti.

Verratti has been extremely impressive in his appearances for the French side this season and his role as a deep-lying playmaker have justified the comparisons with the evergreen Juventus star.

Manchester United could arguably be a perfect fit for the former Pescara star as he could fill the void left by Scholes’ departure and become an ideal partner for Michael Carrick.

However, PSG are unlikely to be outbid if Verratti’s star continues to rise and they look on course to be challenging for the Europe’s biggest honours in the next few years.
