Who could replace Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid?

Published 13 Comments

Undoubtedly one of the greatest talents in football; and he will definitely go down as one of the greats, Cristiano Ronaldo's £80million move from Manchester United to Real Madrid was a record breaking deal, but not everything has been going as smoothly as expected.

The truth about the sour relationship between Madrid and Ronaldo was revealed publicly last year, with Ronaldo revealing he is 'unhappy' at the Bernabeu. Many sports media outlets have claimed that Ronaldo could be set to leave Madrid at the end of the season, and a move to Manchester is possibly on the horizon.

It can be debated, we don't know whether Cristiano Ronaldo may suffer a change of heart and opt to stay with Madrid, especially with Jose Mourinho more than likely leaving the club also; or Ronaldo may just leave.

But a move would not come cheap.

Reports suggest that Real Madrid President Florentino Perez wants the full £80million his club spent, or a fee close to that region.

Who can afford to pay a sum of that amount?

Either of the Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and various Chinese/Russian clubs with rich sugar daddies, perhaps. But from Cristiano Ronaldo's point of view, a move to Europe makes the most sense, if we can break it down even further, maybe a move to one of the Manchester clubs will be his first-choice.

Real Madrid are no slackers though, they could replace Cristiano Ronaldo in an instant - which professional would not be tempted to join a team with such great history? Real Madrid have the money to make waves in the transfer market, and they most certainly would if they decided to sell Cristiano Ronaldo.

So, if the situation arises, and Cristiano Ronaldo does leave Madrid, who can Madrid replace him with?

Well here are five potential solutions to replace Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

Isco | Malaga

A very highly rated youngster playing for a financially-troubled Malaga side who may be forced to sell him in order to sort out their situation.

Most recently, Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Spanish starlet, and Isco fuelled the talks further by suggesting that he would be prepared to move for the good of his team. That may not stop Isco from remaining in his native Spain and signing for the Madrid club, though.

Sergio Aguero | Manchester City

A deal which Real Madrid have wanted for some time, and due to the loyalty he pledges towards Real's big rivals, Atletico - he opted to join Manchester City.

That being said, nothing is stopping Aguero from joining Real Madrid, however it depends on the will of Manchester City, but any fee would likely cost Real over £45million.

David Silva | Manchester City

Another Manchester City player who Real Madrid have wanted for some time, and again, it depends entirely on Manchester City's willingness to sell one of their top stars.

Who knows, Manchester City may throw a spanner in the works and ask for Cristiano in return and also offer a lump of cash along with David Silva, the only stumbling block would appear to be his £200,000-a-week wages.

Neymar | Santos

One of the most highly-rated youngsters in world football, it is only a matter of time before Neymar does the expected and jumps ship to a massive European club, and a move to Spain would certainly appeal to him.

Only handful of clubs could afford Neymar, with Madrid being one of them and it may come down to the club which Neymar personally wants to join. As mentioned, it is very difficult to turn down a move to a team like Real Madrid.

Gareth Bale | Tottenham Hotspur

The most likeliest of the deals - and the form Gareth Bale is in it may be difficult to hold off Real Madrid's interest in the Welshman.

A fee of £55million has been touted as the sum which would be enough to lure Bale away from Spurs, and a handful of stars have either supported Bale to leaving, or advised him to stay.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has backed Gareth Bale to be successful at Madrid, whilst Real Madrid and Barcelona legend Michael Laudrup has told Gareth Bale to think twice before accepting any move.

Ultimately it could come down to whether Tottenham will be playing Champions League football next season.

Although the news on Ronaldo's future remains to be seen, you have to wonder what Real Madrid have up their sleeves if the exit does occur.

Which of these five stars do you think would be the best Cristiano Ronaldo replacement?
