Arsenal are lining up a big-money double swoop for Barcelona duo Victor Valdes and David Villa this summer.
According to Spanish newspaper El Economista, Arsene Wenger sees the Camp Nou pair as ideal additions to his beleaguered squad.
The report claims the Arsenal boss is keen to add an experienced goalkeeper to help the development of current number one Wojciech Szczesny.
It also says Valdes has intimated to Barcelona that he would be open to leaving in the summer ahead of his contract expiry in 2014 – a deal he has already confirmed he will not be extending.
Meanwhile, it claims the Gunners boss was desperate to land Villa in the January transfer window but Barcelona would not sanction the sale.
Villa has been in a and out of hospital over the past week with kidney stone problems but the report claims he is still eager on making the switch to Emirates Stadium.
€16million is stated as the size of Arsenal’s failed bid for Spain’s record goalscorer and that the north London club will go back again in the summer with a similar deal.
Wenger’s future as Arsenal manager has been questioned again this week as the club followed up a shock exit in the FA Cup at home to Blackburn Rovers with a 3-1 humbling at the hands of Bayern Munich.
The Gunners’ future in Europe now looks bleak as they will have to pull off an astonishing result in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 in Munich.
