Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and his Real Madrid equivalent, Cristiano Ronaldo, dominate the headlines when it comes to goalscoring, almost so much that we forget the remarkable deeds of other players.

Messi is on 48 clubs goals for the season already and Cristiano Ronaldo is having something of a slow season – he’s only netted 37 times.

While they are most certainly leading the way in Europe’s top leagues, their almost unimaginable figures are overshadowing those of a group of players that would have been lauded in almost any other era.

Scoring has never been the sole domain of the centre-forward but midfielders aren’t usually held to account for a lack of them.

Assists, however, are another matter and the men charged with delivering the creativity for their sides can often been considered equally to the scoring rates of forwards.

There is a rare breed of midfielder that has feet on both camps and are as comfortable being the forward runner as they are picking them out.

Combining goals scored and assists can give you a true indication as to how effective an attacking midfielder is to his side because of the amount of goals he is directly responsible for.
