Manchester United have made their first move for Porto star James Rodriguez - proposing a potential swap deal involving Old Trafford outcast Nani, according to The Metro.

The newspaper carries reports from Portugal which claim that United have approached Porto over the possible transfer of James Rodriguez, and the Premier League leaders' are reportedly willing to send Nani the other way as part of the deal.

Rodriguez is regarded as one of the most talented young players in world football, and he's been integral to Porto's progress in the Champions League so far. His performances for the Portuguese club have even drawn comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo - with several reports dubbing the youngster the 'new Ronaldo'.

United are hopeful of putting a deal in place for the transfer of Rodriguez before the end of the season.

According to The Metro, Sir Alex Ferguson has proposed the swap deal to Porto officials, as Nani has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese winger was completely left out of United's squad to face Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, although he did make a goalscoring return to the team for their FA Cup fifth round match against Reading.

And the 26-year-old may not be the only face leaving the Manchester club come the end of the season.

The report claims Ferguson is willing to offload Patrice Evra, Kiko Macheda and Bebe in the summer, while a potential deal for Rodriguez would supplement United's existing agreement to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha at the end of the current campaign.

Porto are famously tough negotiators, having secured big fees for their previous star players, including Radamel Falcao and Hulk.

And they've so far rebuffed all attempts to sign Rodriguez, including turning down a £20m offer from AC Milan last summer.
