Arsenal are tracking French defensive-midfielder Maxime Gonalons, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims Gunners chief Arsene Wenger sent scouts to watch the player in action at the weekend, as the Lyon star impressed in a 4-0 win over Bordeaux.

Gonalons was in north London to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League last week, and will be key to the Ligue 1 side’s chances of progression to the last 16 when the teams meet again at the Stade de Gerland tonight (Thursday).

A graduate of the Lyon academy, Gonalons broke into the first team back in 2009, and his influence has gradually increased over the last four years.

His form has also been rewarded with international recognition, with a first international cap coming the player’s way in November 2011. He had played for Les Bleus at U19 and U21 level first.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have a track-record of bringing players to the Emirates Stadium from France, with Olivier Giroud the most recent example.

Alex Song also joined the Gunners from Ligue 1, and it’s finding a long-term replacement for the Cameroonian international - who left for Barcelona last summer - which appears to be on Wenger’s agenda.
