Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool fans can help overturn deficit
Liverpool boss eyes early goal against Zenit St Petersburg
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has called upon the Anfield faithful for a vocal support of their team when they play host to Zenit St Petersburg tonight.
The Northern Irishman was also of the opinion that scoring an early goal would set the perfect platform for the team to stage a comeback. Rodgers insisted that rising to these types of challenges is what Liverpool’s history is all about.
The Merseyside outfit will need to dig deep in the second leg of their round of 32 clash after being comprehensively beaten 2-0 in the first leg.
Rodgers told Liverpool’s official website: "The legend of Liverpool is based on these types of nights.
"The fans will be vital on Thursday night - as they always are in every game. But we'll need them even more. I'm sure we'll get the type of backing that can take us to victory.
"The important factor is not getting an early goal, it's about getting the first goal. If we get the first goal, it will set us up. We'd love to get through."
The Reds will be looking towards inspirational striker Luis Suarez to help turn this tie around. Rodgers revealed that Suarez was disappointed to come off against Swansea at the weekend.
He added: “He didn't want to come off against Swansea, even though there was only 15 minutes left to go. He wanted to stay on and get more goals. But I wanted to look at the bigger picture.
"I wanted him to get a round of applause from the crowd because I thought he deserved it and he's going to be very important for us tomorrow night. So I was giving him a bit of a breather. He's a critical player for us.”
