Gerard Pique admitted that Barcelona were not good enough in their round of 16 Champions League match-up against AC Milan.

The 26-year-old Spaniard was quick to discard the excuses ahead of the Catalan giants' 2-0 loss on Wednesday evening.

He was adamant that the pitch and the referee’s decisions played little part in the outcome of the match, instead conceding that Barcelona were not as sharp as they should have been.

Speaking to Marca.com, Pique said: "Referees can make mistakes sometimes but there are no excuses, not the referee, not the pitch, nothing.

"We had the match under control in the first half but we didn't play well in the second.

"We fell apart after they scored the opener, it was out of control."

The towering centre-back added: "It's a very bad result. When they scored their first goal we lost focus.

"We have to improve, learn and wait for the return leg at the Camp Nou to qualify. Maybe we're not as good as everyone said."

Pique acknowledged the difficulty of playing at the San Siro, and is keen to play the return leg in an attempt to overturn the two-goal deficit.

"The San Siro is a tough stadium to play in and we know that Milan is a big club," said Pique

"We are Barcelona and we have to turn the tie around."

Pique has been one of the most consistent performers in Barcelona’s defence since his arrival from Manchester United in 2008.
