Arsenal eye Dutch international as Bacary Sagna replacement
Arsenal transfer news: Arsene Wenger eyes Daryl Janmaat as replacement for Bacary Sagna
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has identified Feyenoord's right-back Daryl Janmaat as the man to replace Bacary Sagna should the Frenchman leave the club at the end of the season, according to Daily Mirror.
The 30-year-old Arsenal full-back is thought to be considering his options - his contract expires at the end of the 2013-14 season - with Paris St Germain, Inter Milan and a clutch of Middle Eastern clubs thought to be interested.
Wenger is willing to offer Sagna a one-year contract extension, but the France international is thought to be keen on a longer-term deal.
His recent injury past - he's suffered two broken legs in the space of 12 months - has led Arsenal to explore alternatives, with Dutch star Daryl Janmaat thought to be one of the main targets.
The 23-year-old has three Netherlands caps, and has been scouted extensively by the Gunners in the Eredivisie this season.
He joined Feyenoord from Heerenveen last summer, and Arsenal's close relationship with the Dutch club, Arsenal and Feyenoord have a loan agreement, could facilitate a potential deal.
Sagna is a major injury doubt for the Gunners' match against Aston Villa on Saturday. The right-back picked up a knock against Bayern Munich mid-week and Arsene Wenger confirmed he's had to play through the pain in recent weeks.
Wenger said recently: "I am convinced that he will play at centre-back more often at some stage - although not yet, because he is only just 30 and certainly has three or four years left at right-back.
"He has criticised his own form recently but the things you never question from Bac are his commitment, his mental attitude, his desire to win and his intelligence.
“If he has not been playing as he would expect, it is down to his injury. It takes time to come back, and he has played through a lot of pain - in fact, he is one of the strongest players I have met when it comes to doing that."
