Michael Owen may land himself a new contract at the end of the season for Stoke City.

This comes after Stoke boss Tony Pulis refused to rule out a new deal for the former England International.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid star has rarely featured in the Premier League this season for The Potters, however there is still a possibility Owen will stay on past this season. Pulis told The Mirror: "He doesn’t need to play a certain amount of games to win a contract. There is nothing like that in his deal. There is no strings attached to his contract at all."

While his fitness has undoubtedly been a problem, surely his ability to function as a top striker in one of the top leagues in the world is an issue too. However, Owen has felt he still has something to offer, stating that he won’t drop down the league structure in order to play football.

At this stage, one must surely begin to question his reasons for wanting to stay on in the top-flight. To be low down in the Manchester United pecking order may be acceptable but to be below Peter Crouch and Cameron Jerome in the hierarchy at Stoke surely can’t be easy to stomach. Nothing against Crouch and Jerome but they can’t claim to be anywhere near the player Owen was in his heyday.

But unfortunately for Owen, his heyday was at least five or six years ago. If he was unwilling to drop down a league in order to play regularly why didn’t he consider the sunny retreat of the ageing Premier League professional that is Major League Soccer?

Fitness permitting he would have been guaranteed playing time and acclaim. But he doesn’t appear interested in that. Instead, he appears to be looking for a club close enough to his stables to pay him in the hope that he might be as good as he once was.
