Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has picked his dream six-a-side line up from the current Old Trafford squad.
The England international took part in a recent Google+ hangout with DHL on YouTube with teammates Tom Cleverley and Jonny Evans, where he was given the chance to play at being Sir Alex Ferguson and pick his team.
However, Rooney was tasked with selecting a line up for the small-sided game that is so popular around the UK and was spared picking a full XI.
The former Everton man opted to leave a designated goalkeeper out of his side, so the six men he chose would presumably have to take turns between the sticks.
Another interesting decision from Rooney was resisting the temptation to pick any traditional defenders in his line up – he opted against going with Cleverley’s suggestion of Rio Ferdinand.
When it was pointed out that Evans failed to get a mention, Rooney claimed defenders were unnecessary in this particular form of the game, something the northern Irishman refuted.
In the end it was two Manchester United veterans first on the list as Rooney looked to go for experience and calm heads in a format that can move very quickly.
Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are the pair and will take their vast years in the game to help keep the others’ feet on the ground.
Two summer signings have impressed Rooney enough to get the nod; it was no surprise that this season’s top scorer Robin van Persie is in there after such a terrific run of goalscoring form.
Shinji Kagawa may have struggled to make a huge impact on the Premier League just yet, owing largely to injury, but Rooney has obviously seen enough in training to feel the Japan international was worth a place.
Manchester United’s youth set-up is famed for regularly producing quality players for the first team and Rooney turned to two of the most recent graduates to fill the final spaces in his line up.
Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley were the lucky pair, tasked to provide the youthful energy and exuberance to compliment their more senior teammates.
Both are becoming crucial members of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and they are expected to be playing alongside Rooney at Old Trafford for many years to come.
What do you think of Wayne Rooney’s six-a-side team? Which players would you choose from the current Manchester United squad?
