The young magician Lionel Messi consistently dazzles audiences worldwide when he plays for Barcelona, who’s squad have been dubbed the greatest club side ever, but is Messi the greatest player in the history of football?
Undoubtedly the greatest player of his era, Messi at the age of just 25 has won 3 Champions League titles, 5 Spanish League titles, 2 Copa Del Rey’s, 5 Spanish Supercopa’s, 2 club world cup’s and 2 UEFA super cups with Barcelona.
Messi has won many individual prizes including a record four consecutive Ballon d'Or titles. He also holds the record for the most goals scored by anyone in a calendar year as he hit a staggering 91 goals in 2012.
However, he is missing something. Despite a brilliant career that is far from over, Messi has failed, as of yet, to win the World Cup with Argentina. Many legends of the game and current superstars have commented on whether or not they think Messi is the best player the world has ever seen. To overtake legends like Diego Maradona and Pele, perhaps Messi must win at least one World Cup.
Messi has already had two failed attempts at winning the World Cup, however, he has the chance to change this on South American soil in 2014. Many believe Messi may have his best chance to lead Argentina to glory in Brazil, but others argue Messi doesn’t perform as well for his country as he does for his club, and that the rest of the Argentine team isn’t good enough to win a World Cup anyway.
If Argentina fail to win the World Cup next year it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Messi compete at the World Cup’s to come in Russia in 2018 and even in Qatar in 2022 when Messi will be 34 years of age and perhaps in the final years of his career.
Yes, it will be difficult for Messi to win a World Cup with the current Argentine team lacking quality in some areas but Maradona turned an average Argentina into a World Cup winning team, so for Messi to be the greatest player of all time does he have to do the same? It would certainly silence the few critics he does have, but maybe Messi is the best ever, regardless.
