While not being the most exciting Premier League of the season, this weekend provided some moments of great drama and quality.
Norwich City’s last minute win over Everton made for a tremendous story and David Moyes’ anger at the fact the goal came after the three minutes of injury time given had been played.
Premier League holders Manchester City put in a top quality display to ease past Chelsea thanks to two goals quality from Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez.
However, it could have all been different had Frank Lampard not had his penalty to send Chelsea 1-0 up saved by his England teammate Joe Hart.
Manchester United despatched bottom club QPR with a professional display to win 2-0, though bizarre injury to Robin van Persie will have the Old Trafford medical team slightly worried.
Sunday’s other Premier League game saw Newcastle United prevail in another thriller involving Southampton, with the St James’ Park side winning 4-2.
Arsenal came back from a difficult week to grind out a win against Aston Villa, though they needed a late Santi Cazorla to see off Paul Lambert’s battling side.
As there were so many terrific individual displays, it was difficult for GMF to pick out their best XI from the weekend.
We did it though and here it is for your enjoyment/ridicule:
GK – Joe Hart, Manchester City
Brushed off recent mistakes to make a crucial penalty save from Lampard and provide a base for the Citizens to seal an important victory.
RB – Rafael, Manchester United
Scored an incredible goal to settle early nerves and cleared a Christopher Samba header off the line.
CB – Matija Nastasic, Manchester City
Once again showed he has an old head on young shoulders and dealt with Chelsea’s attacking threat without fuss.
CB – Maynor Figueroa, Wigan Athletic
Almost got the first but scored the second in another brilliant win for Roberto Martinez’s team.
LB – Nacho Monreal, Arsenal
Recovered magnificently from a shaky start to set up the winning goal.
MF – Yohan Cabaye, Newcastle United
Alan Pardew’s plans rely on Cabaye playing well and he did so here, scoring the important third and picking apart the gaps in the Saints defence.
MF – Santi Cazorla, Arsenal
The little Spaniard had one of those games where everything looked like it would go right. Two clinical finishes got the Gunners a much-needed three points.
MF – Yaya Toure, Manchester City
Not his most dominant throughout butshowed his class with a quality opener.
FW – Dimitar Berbatov, Fulham
It was one of those days where you wonder why Berbatov isn’t playing for one of the top teams – scored a magnificent volley and his interplay was sublime.
FW – Romelu Lukaku, West Brom
Chelsea will be wishing they had him – scored a penalty and got his second with a bit of fortune created by his determination.
FW – Papiss Cisse, Newcastle United
If he can recapture his form from this time last season it will bode well for the Toon – he scored an unbelievable volley.
