Arsenal have been given encouragement in their chase for France international midfielder Maxime Gonalons.

The Lyon defensive midfielder has reportedly been interesting Gunners manager Arsene Wenger and he will have been pleased by the players recent quotes.

“If I have to go, it would be abroad I like the English and the German leagues. They are awesome,” he told Fichajes.com recently.

"When I see the pitch and that type of game, I feel it's a dream."

The report in the Spanish publication claims Wenger sees 23-year-old as the answer to Arsenal’s defensive midfield problems.

It also claims the Emirates Stadium technician feels he hasn’t properly replaced Alex Song since he moved to Barcelona in the summer and thinks Gonalons can be the man to do it.

Mikel Arteta has impressed at times in that position this season but it isn’t his natural role and Arsenal have struggled to cover in front of the back four at times.

Gonalons is a hard working destroyer in Lyon’s midfield and impressed in their recent Europa League last 32 tie against the Gunners’ local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

However, he is not the only defensive midfelder being linked with a switch to Wenger’s side.

Both Etienne Capoue of Toulouse and Celtic’s Victor Wanyama have been mooted as possible options.

Were Gonalons to join Arsenal, he would be the latest in a long and stellar line of French stars to do so.
