Per Mertesacker labels Santi Cazorla the 'perfect footballer'
Arsenal defender full of praise for Spanish teammate after his match-winning double
Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has hailed Santi Cazorla as the 'perfect footballer' after he scored two goals at the weekend.
The Spaniard has been impressive in his first season in the Premier League and managed to take his goalscoring tally to 11 on Saturday after his match-winning brace against relegation-threatened Aston Villa.
Santi Cazorla has become the first player since Thierry Henry to score at least 10 goals in his debut season for the club and has impressed pundits and fans alike since joining from Malaga.
Defender Mertesacker has praised the Spaniard and believes he will be vital in the race to finish inside the top four.
“You see he takes his chances with his technique and his feeling,” the German international told Arsenal Player. “He is the perfect footballer. He has the technique to score goals and that’s what we need after losing the last two home games.
“There was a bit of pressure but we are on a good run in the league so just needed to focus on that. It was a very important [result].”
Arsenal come up against fierce-rivals Tottenham at the weekend as the race for fourth hots up and Mertesacker is hoping that his side can keep their good form going, especially in North London derbies after the two previous ties ended 5-2 to Arsenal.
“We want to climb up the league into the top four,” he said. “That’s our target for the next couple of weeks. We have enough games to achieve that.
“We have the derby and we want to go on like [against Villa]. The last two home games against Tottenham were absolutely fantastic. We try to keep that in our mind and want to achieve the same things, to score goals.
“If we play our game properly, we can compete with every team in the Premier League. That’s what we need next Sunday.”
