PSG to test Manchester United’s resolve over Wayne Rooney

Manchester United could face a fight to keep star man Wayne Rooney this summer as big spending Paris St Germain are ready to test their resolve, according to The Times.

The report claims the Qatar-backed French side are seriously considering a bid for the 27-year-old, who has been key to the success of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side over the past decade.

The Old Trafford boss would be loath to see Rooney leave but a big bid from PSG for a player entering the final two years of his contract – at the end of which he will be nearing 30 – could tempt the Manchester United hierarchy.

The report claims the Ligue 1 leaders are keen to add another striker to their attack force and see Rooney as the ideal partner for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It also says bids in the region of £40million would likely prompt the Manchester United moneymen into some consideration.

Rooney is the current top earner at Old Trafford and the Red Devils will likely be thinking hard as to whether he should continue to be so for a new deal that would likely take him well into his 30s.

However, the signing of Robin van Persie has shown that the Premier League leaders are willing to pay the price if Ferguson believes he has the right man.

Rooney would be the latest in a long line of big name stars to join PSG over the past 18 months since the takeover from the Qatar Investment Authority.

Were he to move to Paris, he would joined the likes of Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Thiago Silva, Javier Pastore, Lucas Moura and former England teammate, David Beckham.
