Chelsea insist Rafael Benitez is staying on

Published 9 Comments

Chelsea have insisted it is “business as usual” at Stamford Bridge and that Rafa Benitez was still Blues interim manager.

Reports of Benitez heading for the door were sparked after his controversial attack on the Chelsea fans that had opposed his appointment.

The former Liverpool boss claimed those fans that were bringing banners to games and chanting for his dismissal were letting down the Chelsea players by not getting behind them.

He also criticised the Stamford Bridge hierarchy for having his job title contain the word ‘interim’, claiming he did not know it would be there and that it had undermined him from the beginning.

Criticism of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s officials is unlikely to have gone down too well with them, so speculation over whether he would see out his deal when it expires at the end of the season was understandable.

However, it appears Benitez’s job is safe for now as a Chelsea spokesperson this morning: “It’s business as usual”.

The fact that the outburst came following a win for Chelsea made it all the more baffling.

Goals from Ramires and Victor Moses sealed a 2-0 victory for the Blues over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fifth round to set up a quarter-final clash with Manchester United.
