Manchester City target happy to stay in Serie A
Manchester City transfer news: Pedro Obiang says he’s happy at Sampdoria
Manchester City have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of promising midfielder Pedro Obiang after he insisted he was happy in Serie A.
The 20-year-old has been impressing for Sampdoria this season and Citizens boss Roberto Mancini has been credited with an interest in him.
Manchester City now look as though they will be made to wait for the chance to land the Spain Under-21 international, if his recent quotes are anything to go by.
Obiang insisted he was content with life at in Italy and revealed he could yet extend his deal.
“At the moment I have nothing to say about the transfer market,” he is quoted as saying by Tuttomercatoweb.
"I'm fine here and next week we may conclude negotiations on a new contract. For now I will stay at Sampdoria - I want to progress a little more here.”
Mancini was a Sampdoria player for 15 years and could have been hoping his connections with the club from Genoa gave him an edge over any rivals trying to sign him.
Manchester City will be ready to rebuild again in the summer as Manchester United look likely to snatch back their Premier League title this year after racing to a 12-point lead at the top of the table.
Obiang made his breakthrough at Samp last season as they gained promotion from Serie B and has kept his place in the starting XI this year.
He is a levelheaded central midfielder with good distribution skills but also brings a significant physical presence in front of the defence.
