Lionel Messi has won the last 4 Ballon d'or and presently Fifa Ballon d'or competitions, however is it finally the time for Cristiano Ronaldo to overtake the Argentinean superstar?

Arguments about the abilities of Messi and Ronaldo have been occurring for several years now, with Messi being named the victor on numerous occasions.

However the stage now seems set for Ronaldo - Messi is in not in his usual invincible form, a crucial Champions League tie is around the corner and Ronaldo is the man likely to lead Real Madrid to victory.

Although recent claims that Lionel Messi is starting to lose some of his outstanding ability and influence seem to be somewhat premature, two bad games signal a blip in form not decline in a career, though Cristiano Ronaldo does have the chance to put pressure on Messi's throne.

Ronaldo could resurrect Real Madrid's season when the Spanish giants visit Old Trafford for a Champions League fixture next week; this is coming soon after his sensational display in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final which saw Messi's Barcelona knocked out.

Barcelona have it all to do in their tie against AC Milan after their 2-0 defeat at San Siro in the first leg.

Messi failed to perform in that game, and if the same happens at Camp Nou in 12 days time then Barcelona will almost certainly be eliminated from the tournament.

If Ronaldo plays a key role in a Real Madrid victory, and Barcelona are knocked out, then he will undoubtedly be the best player left in the competition, and as such all eyes will be on him.

Ronaldo could therefore have the chance to display to the world that he deserves to be named its best player.

Discussion over whether Messi or Ronaldo will undoubtedly rage on and the two camps are so entrenched that broad concurrence often appears unattainable, though the Barcelona superstar has utterly dominated in the individual awards stakes.

However, the time may well be right for a major shift in power to occur, and all eyes will be on Old Trafford next week to see if it will happen.
