Sir Alex Ferguson wants to become a director at Manchester United when he retires from his position as manager.

Back in 2002, Ferguson said that he was going to retire at the end of the season, but he later back-tracked and went on to guide United to yet more success.

Ferguson, who has been at the helm since November 1986, has refused to put a date on his retirement, but has revealed he'd be more than happy to take up a role as a director when the time eventually comes to bring an end to his illustrious managerial career.

"There's no getting rid of me," Ferguson told twentyfour7 Football magazine. "I will probably become director."

When asked about when he will retire, he added: "Nobody knows, neither do I. It won't be a doctor that tells me to quit!"

There has been much speculation as to who will replace Ferguson when he does call-time on his reign at United, with David Moyes, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all linked with the Old Trafford hot-seat.

And while the 71-year-old boss is likely to be consulted with regards to his long-term successor, Ferguson is adamant that he won't have the final say.

"They'll ask me," he added. "But I think it'll be a club decision not mine."

Ferguson also made it clear that he wants his former players to remain at the club, be it as part of the coaching set-up or in ambassadorial roles, citing Bayern Munich as the "perfect" example to follow.

"I think Bayern Munich is the perfect model.

"It's no problem having a replica of that for this club who have had so many great players over the years and who are now ambassadors like Andy Cole, Bryan Robson, Peter Schmeichel.

"There are quite a few of them here now and that's a role we should be using as well.

"Looking at my present crop, it's difficult, but the likes of Giggs and Scholes will be part of the structure here. 

"Darren Fletcher in the long term possibly and Nicky Butt is with the reserves.

"We try to get as many former players in the set-up as we can, we've got a good back-up.

"We look ahead because that is succession planning in terms of structure - they've the experience of being at the club, being a player here, knowing what it takes to be a winner. 

"It's good to have it here, keep it within the club."
