Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has lamented his side’s inconsistency this season, but wants them to conclude their campaign on a positive note.

The Merseyside team, playing their third successive season without Champions League football, currently find themselves sitting eighth in the Premier League standings, a massive ten points behind fourth side Chelsea. With just 11 more games left for them to overcome this deficit, many have already ruled out their top-four chances.

The Reds are also running the risk of not being able to qualify for the less glamorous Europa League. Irrespective of their current position and everything which is at stake, the Anfield chief has called upon his side to give it their all in the closing stages of the campaign.

The Northern Irishman believes that inconsistency led to their failure to mount a challenge for the Champions League slots this term.

Rodgers told reporters: “We have got 11 games to go and our only focus is on ourselves - we just look at our next game.

“Especially how the season has gone for us: we have been brilliant at times and inconsistent at others.

“If we can come up with that consistency over these closing months it will provide a springboard for next season.

“Finish this season as strong as we possibly can, as high as we can, and then we’ll be in a much better place come the summer to really push on."

Liverpool will look to close the gap on their Champion League rivals as they take on Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium today.
