Manchester United are keeping tabs on highly-rated Brazil under-20 captain Antonio Carlos, according to the Sunday People.

The 19-year-old Corinthians defender has made a handful of appearances for the Corinthians senior side after progressing through the youth ranks.

But it was his performances as he led the junior side to the Copa Sao Paulo de Futebol Junior title last year that caught the attention of Manchester United.

Old Trafford officials have reportedly approached the Corinthians’ hierarchy, and have opened initial talks with the club’s director of football Edu.

Edu, a former-Premier League player with Arsenal, has been contacted regarding the player’s availability, although United are not expected to make an official move anytime soon. For now, the Premier League leaders will continue to monitor the centre-back’s development.

United have a number of young Brazilian players already in their first-team squad – Anderson signed in a big-money deal from Porto but Rafael and Fabio joined the club from Brazilian side Fluminense as teenagers back in 2008.
