Chelsea transfer flops under Roman Abramovich

Fernando Torres biggest Chelsea flop?.

An abundance of clubs have had horrible luck when it comes to dishing out large fees for top quality players, and Chelsea are no exception.

Since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has taken over the London side, big bucks have been thrown at some of the greatest talents. Here's a list of some of the worst transfer flops in recent Chelsea history:

Yuri Zhirkov

You would think being the most expensive Russian football player at £18.6 million Zhirkov would deliver a mass of excellent performances for the Blues. Not even close.

In his two year campaign with Chelsea he only made twenty-nine appearances. Ashley Cole proved to be the better pick at the left-back position and he never really cemented  a place down in the side. On this occasion Abramovich wasted £18.6 million on twenty-nine appearances.

Andriy Shevchenko

The greatest Ukrainian player in history. Purchased from AC Milan for £30.8 million after an excellent showing with the Italian club he became

the most expensive transfer in Premier League history. But after three years in the first team, Shevchenko only accumulated nine goals.

You would think that overzealous owner Abramovich would have learnt his lesson by now.

Fernando Torres

During his time at Liverpool, Fernando Torres was one of the most feared strikers in the world. With class finishing and amazing acrobatic touches, Torres could have scored with his eyes closed in most matches.

Roman Abromovich saw an opportunity to refresh his ageing strike force and signed the Spaniard for £50 million. Chelsea purchased the Spaniard for a record £50 million during the January 2011 transfer window.

In his first few months at Chelsea Torres scored just one goal. Essentially, Abramovich spent £50 million for a single goal. Most have blamed the managing staff for not pushing him along. Others think that there is a lack of experienced midfielders that create chances for Torres to score. What is for certain, Torres' career has never taken off at Chelsea.
