Manchester United host Real Madrid in a huge Champions League tie tonight, and confidence should be high at Old Trafford after a convincing 4-0 win over Norwich City at the weekend.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side utilised their defensive strengths in the last 16 first leg encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu, but will be looking to make a bigger mark at the other end of the pitch to ensure their passage to the quarter-finals.
That said, a solid platform at the back will help the Red Devils build towards a positive result, and David De Gea has become the only choice between the sticks over time for the Premier League leaders.
Nemanja Vidic played against the Canaries and is likely to miss out against Los Blancos, meaning Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand guard the centre once again. Rafael should start at right-back, with Patrice Evra on the opposite flank.
In midfield, Ferguson has plenty of options, but Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs would appear to be a good option for the Scot at home.
Shinji Kagawa played himself into contention on Saturday with a hat-trick, whilst Danny Welbeck’s first leg performance out wide makes him a safe bet to play on the right.
And, despite speculation suggesting otherwise, Wayne Rooney should start just behind Robin Van Persie in a side that threatens goals from all directions.
Manchester United predicted line-up v Real Madrid:
David De Gea; Rafael, Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra; Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs; Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa; Robin Van Persie.
