With rumours increasingly rife that Manchester United are lining up a sensational bid to lure Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, there are few United fans who would turn down the prospect.
However, there are reasons why United would be far better off without the Portuguese star. There is no doubt that if Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford as a United player his success would inevitably follow him. He's an absolute superstar and his skill level is perhaps only matched by his personality.
During his time at the club, before moving to Real Madrid, Ronaldo was a lesser player than he is today and he carried the side to Champions League glory as well as consistent domestic prowess. Also during his time there were players flying under the radar with below par performances and all-in-all being subdued by the brilliance of Cristiano. For exactly that reason is why if he returned to the club that made him a superstar, the team would suffer as a result.
The likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, amongst others would be completely subdued as Ronaldo's role grew again. While he was at the club, Rooney was a shadow of his current self and since his departure the England international has grown into a far more mature, skilful and reliable player for both club and country.
Similarly with van Persie, who has fulfilled a Ronaldo style role while carrying Arsenal to Champions League football last season, a player of Ronaldo's calibre could potentially stifle the class of which van Persie has shown this year, and more than likely would disrupt the partnership with Rooney which has started to flourish in the latter stages of the season.
What is so attractive about the current United side is that it appears as though there is great spirit within the team. This spirit is what has almost surely now guided them to avenging their last second loss of the title last season.
Of course good players help in that, but player for player, teams like Manchester City and possibly Chelsea have the upper hand on United with creativity and quality footballers. What has won United the title and kept them a quality side over such a long period of time has been the spirit within the team and the way that they consistently play well together.
If Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford it would be a coup and an expensive one at that, but the impact on the rest of the team would not only counter the effect the Portuguese winger would have, but stunt the growth of a team, that over the coming years may be back to its dominating best.
