Iker Casillas has been an influential part of the Spanish National Team. He has captained them to two European Championships and a World Cup. However, the success at club level has not been as easy to come by as of late.
This season has seen the Real Madrid keeper failing to keep clean sheets, being benched by manager, Jose Mourinho, and picking up a bad hand injury. The lack of consistency, as well as the injury, may have paved the way for a new number one.
One candidate for this take over would be the German, Manuel Neuer. Neuer has allowed only eight goals in all competitions since August. This season, he has made 23 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich, had 16 clean sheets, and made 45 saves.
The 26-year-old is having a very successful campaign. With 17 points separating them from second place Borussia Dortmund, Bayern look well on their way to taking the Bundesliga crown.
The other leading contender for the number one ranking would be Manchester City's Joe Hart. The Englishman has made 28 Premier League appearances this season, allowing 24 goals. He has had 16 clean sheets and made 46 saves. The 2011-2012 campaign saw Hart leading his side to their first Premier League title in 34 years. However, a repeat this season looks unlikely as the Citizens trail league leading Manchester United by 12 points.
What makes the arguments for Neuer and Hart so strong is that they have been consistent. Unlike Casillas, they have been healthy and starting since their respective seasons began. All three keepers play very important roles for their teams, but it may be time for the reigning number one to surrender his title.
