Arsenal keen on Real Madrid defender

Arsenal have reportedly targeted Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol as a potential summer signing to shore up their backline.

The Gunners have had a difficult two months, having been knocked out of the FA Cup, defeated 3-1 at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and suffered a setback in the chase for the top four with a loss to north London rivals Tottenham.

In an attempt to improve their defensive record, Arsene Wenger has pinpointed out-of-favour Albiol as a summer buy, the Daily Mail has reported.

With the swift rise of 19-year-old Raphael Varane to the Real Madrid first-team and the presence of Sergio Ramos and Pepe at the Santiago Bernabeu, Albiol has made just six league starts this season and could be subject to a summer transfer.

Wenger is believed to be desperate for a centre-back, with Welsh international Ashley Williams also linked to a move to the Emirates Stadium.

27-year-old Albiol has been a regular member of Spain's international squad and was part of the team that won the European Championships in 2008 and 2012 as well as the World Cup in 2010.
