Former Real Madrid super star, Santillana has stated that Los Blancos should ensure that they keep hold of the services of current manager Jose Mourinho, if he succeeds in bringing the record tenth European crown home.

Real Madrid are the most successful club in the history of the most prestigious European competition, having won the title on a record 9 occasions.

The 10th title has always been a dream for the Spanish giants and the time period has stretched to over 10 years now, since their last fruitful campaign.

Zinedine Zidane was the man, whose wonder goal led Madrid to their 9th title at the biggest stage in Europe, and since then, the Bernabeu faithful have been waiting for the moment, when the capital attends the team march, carrying the most hallowed trophy that club football has to offer.

With the appointment of Jose Mourinho, many fans decided to sniff the glory that Mourinho has so often promised with his arrival.

The Portuguese manager has won the crown on two previous occasions in dramatic fashion, once with his Porto side, and secondly with his Inter team, back in 2011.

The tactician is seen as an expert of the competition, but the last two campaigns have not turned out to be the ones that the Bernabeu faithful were expecting.

Madrid bowed out of the Champions League on the semi final stages in the past two seasons, falling short on quality against bitter rivals Barcelona in 2011 and then against Bavarian giants Bayern Munich n 2012.

Santillana hopes that Cristiano Ronaldo will make the difference against his former club and also supported Mourinho’s cause by stating that the board must keep the Portuguese if he wins the Champions League.

He said: "I don't know whether the time has come for Mourinho and Madrid to part company this summer. Winning only the Copa del Rey with this team will not be enough for Real Madrid.

"However, if the team bounces back and manages to win the Champions League, I don't think that Madrid should let him go.

"Cristiano is a great player and one of the best in the world. He has incredible natural abilities, spectacular physique, great height, fantastic fitness, speed. He really has everything. He's a freak of nature.”
