Arsenal have seen many stunning defenders over the years. Now they have lost their strong defence and look weak at the back. However, one name that has become important to Arsenal recently is Bacary Sagna.

He is one of the top players in the Premier League in his position, and has shown that he has got both a defensive and an attacking mind. He has scored some goals for his side and has made some vital challenges in some of the most important games. Saying all that, he may depart the club this summer.

Arsenal held talks with Sagna earlier in the season over a potential new contract; but it was reported that Sagna was unhappy with the contract length Arsenal were offering. So now, his future is unclear. PSG are favourite contenders to take the French defender away from the Emirates, leaving Arsenal with Carl Jenkinson to step up to the plate.

Despite the fact that Jenkinson puts all effort into games, he doesn’t quite have that class with him yet and looks weaker compared to the other regulars. This will mean the club will have to find a way to replace Sagna, although, Arsenal are known for selling, but not replacing. If this is a similar case with Sagna, then that will leave even more raised brows towards the Gunners’ defence.

If Arsenal looked for a replacement, they probably won’t get very far. The Gunners are set to miss out on Champions league football next season, so players of Sagna’s calibre will have no intention to join the Gunners in the summer.

There may be options out there for the Gunners as not all players look for Champions league football, but most of them, will be similar to Jenkinson; inexperienced and hasn’t managed to fit into their national squads. Of course this will only cause more problems for a side that has already had its fair share of defensive issues.

Sagna is one of the best right-backs Arsenal will have at the club for a while, so selling shouldn’t be an option. By the looks of things, they will struggle to replace him this year so they should fight to keep him just a little longer.

Even a year’s extension to his contract will be enough for Arsenal to get back on track and ensure they get Champions League football. Only then will they be able to replace him…whether it’s next season or the season after. Selling this summer is not assential for Arsenal. On the other hand, some players who don’t have an impact at Arsenal should be sold, but Sagna is certainly not one of those players.
