Chelsea defender David Luiz has spoken of his and his side’s desire to win the Europa League this season.

Ahead of their first-leg last-16 clash against Romanian outfit Steaua Bucharest on Thursday, Luiz has announced his aspirations to add to the two trophies he has won at Stamford Bridge so far – last year’s Champions League and FA Cup double.

Last season the Blues famously upset all the odds to win the Champions League but having been humiliatingly knocked out in the group stages this season, Luiz and co will have to settle for Europa League glory if they are to go all the way this time.

But Luiz insists the players are over their nightmare exit and are looking forward to the challenge.

He said: "This is a great opportunity to win another European title. Last season it was in the Champions League, everybody was happy.

"I have the hunger again and I think Chelsea have the hunger again to win titles.

"This is one big club. This is the way you need to think to play for a big club.

"It's an opportunity to win one more game, the first leg and we're looking for the title of the Europa League."

Deployed as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-half this season, Luiz is also looking ahead to Sunday’s massive FA Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The eccentric Brazilian international is confident of his side’s chances particularly considering the circumstances in which the Red Devils exited the Champions League against Real Madrid.

"It's difficult when you have been knocked out of an amazing competition like the Champions League because your confidence is not the same after," said Luiz.

"The happiness in Manchester United's hearts will not be there and Chelsea can use this to win our game on Sunday. United will be playing at home but some players and supporters will be thinking 'it's not the Champions League' and it will be difficult for them to come in with the same form."
