It’s been almost eight years since Arsenal last lifted a major trophy and unless the north London based club can produce something very special against Bayern Munich in Germany next week then a top four finish would be the only thing left for the Gunners to aim for in another intolerable season for the clubs fans.
Following stunning defeats in the Capital One Cup and FA Cup to Bradford City and Blackburn Rovers the manager and his playing staff have come in for some criticism from fans and media alike and the most recent loss against local rivals Tottenham will ensure a tense and nervy time for the Gunners in the final ten matches of the campaign.
However it’s not all bad news at the Emirates, in players like Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Ramsey the club has a young talented core to build around. Here are five players who could solve Arsenal's problems.
Marouane Fellani | Everton
The Belgian midfielder has been an attacking force for the Toffees this season and can also sit in front of the back four in a more defensive role. At 6ft 4in he would give the Gunners a much needed physical presence in the centre of the park, however should Everton decide to sell competition for his signature would be fierce.
Mats Hummels | Borussia Dortmund
Don’t be surprised if the 24-year-old German centre-back is playing for Barcelona in the next few years. The defender is known for starting attacks from defence and has even been likened to German legend Franz Beckenbauer. Arsenal would likely have to pay a large transfer fee and wage packet which the club has been reluctant to do in the past.
Romelu Lukaku | Chelsea
Lukaku has been on loan at West Brom this season scoring 12 goals so far and has begun to show signs of why he was dubbed the new Drogba. Granted it’s unlikely Chelsea will want to sell but should the unfortunate manager who replaces Rafa Benitez choose to do so than the Emirates would be a fantastic place for the young Belgian to ply his trade.
Asmir Begovic | Stoke City
Jack Butland will be a Stoke City player this summer which has paved for the way for Bosnian goalkeeper Begovic to make a big money move. Manchester United are rumoured to be in the hunt for the 25-year-old, however with David de Gea delivering some solid form during the second half of the season a move to north London could be on the cards.
Jordy Clasie | Feyenoord
Clasie has been labelled as the ‘Dutch Xavi’ and look set to have a bright future in the game, at just 21-years-old this is a player Arsene Wenger could develop and take to the next level as he has done with so many young players during his tenure at Arsenal, however any player who is compared to Xavi will be tracked by a host of clubs and Wenger should move quickly for his signature.
