Promising young Arsenal striker Benik Afobe has been ruled out for the rest of the season after picking up an injury on loan at Millwall.

The England Under-21 international has since returned to Emirates Stadium for his recovery from what is believed to be torn anterior cruciate ligament.

It is a blow for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger as he had predicted big things for the 20-year-old before an unsuccessful loan stint at Bolton Wanderers early in the season.

It was hoped the move to Millwall would reignite Afobe’s form and put him back on the path towards an eventual place in the Arsenal first team.

He is yet to make a senior appearance for Arsenal but had been impressing with his performances for their youth and reserve sides.

Such was Afobe’s promise, Barcelona were reported to be interested in luring him away from Arsenal as a 16-year-old.

The injury is not only expected to end Afobe’s season, but also reported to keep him on the sidelines for the rest of the year after undergoing surgery on his left knee.
