Liverpool have joined the race to sign French defender Mamadou Sakho, according to reports.

TalkSPORT cites French sources when claiming that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has stepped-up his interest in the talented 23-year-old, who has graduated to the Paris Saint-Germain first team through their academy.

But, despite making his debut in 2007, Sakho has recently fallen down the pecking order at the Parc des Princes, with Thiago Silva getting the nod from manager Carlo Ancelotti this season.

A lack of opportunities could end the 12-cap international’s spell with the current Ligue 1 leaders, and Liverpool are one of the sides looking to capitalise on the situation.

TalkSPORT claims three of the current centre-back crop could leave Anfield in the summer, with Jamie Carragher set to retire and both Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates linked with moves away from Merseyside.

That would leave big defensive hole for Liverpool to fill, and Sakho would certainly quality and experience despite his young age.

However, the Reds aren’t the only Premier League club keen on bringing the player to England, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger showing an interest in the PSG star in the past, according to the radio station.

The Gunners have a track record of bringing players to the Emirates Stadium from Ligue 1, with Olivier Giroud the most recent example last summer.

Defender Laurent Koscielny is another French international who moved to north London from his homeland, but Arsenal would also have to fend off a challenge from Newcastle if they are still serious about landing the player, the report claims.
