AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi’s diminishing reputation has taken a further blow after being sentenced to a year in prison after he was found guilty over an illegal wiretap.

Already convicted of tax fraud and awaiting a sex trial later this year, the 76-year-old former Italian Prime Minister was sentenced on Thursday after being accused of arranging for a police wiretap regarding a political rival to be revealed.

This was then published in the Il Giornale newspaper - ran by his brother, Paolo, who has been sentenced to 27 months in jail.

Berlusconi is set to appeal to the court and has maintained that he is clear of any wrongdoing. The Italian is also awaiting a decision regarding an appeal made to the courts after being given another one-year sentence over tax fraud in October of last year.

In another separate incident, Berlusconi, who bought Milan in 1986, toing and froing between political responsibilities and presidential duties of the Italian giants, is also awaiting a trial concerning allegations that he paid an underage prostitute for sex.

The BBC has reported that although Berlusconi is likely to avoid actually having to go to jail over this latest offence, but is just another conviction that is lowering and lowering his already deteriorating reputation.
