This week served up some treats on the European stage, as well as an abundance of drama and brilliance.
Manchester United were left fuming and cursing the officials after a controversial red card for Nani signalled a collapse against Real Madrid that saw them crash out of the Champions League last 16 stage.
Goals from former Old Trafford hero Cristiano Ronaldo and ex-Tottenham Hotspur man Luka Modric cancelled out the Nani-inspired own goal from Sergio Ramos.
Gareth Bale was the catalyst for another inspiring Spurs victory at White Hart Lane just a couple of days later as Andre Villas-Boas’ side thrashed Inter Milan 3-0 in their Europa League last 16 tie.
A demolition of the same scoreline took place in Germany as Borussia Dortmund booked their place alongside Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Mario Götze was the star of the show as Jurgen Klöpp’s side despatched Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk with little fuss and sent a warning out to the rest of the teams in the competitions with a terrific win.
With all that in mind, GiveMeFootball decided to put together a European team of the Week for your perusal.
Here it is…
GK –Diego Lopez, Real Madrid
Made a number of crucial saves to keep out Sir Alex Ferguson’s men as they pushed on late in the game.
RB – Danny Simpson, Newcastle United
Alan Pardew’s team did brilliantly to be the first away team to shut out Anzhi Makhachkala this season.
CB – Raphael Varane, Real Madrid
Was slightly suspect on the United goal but was terrific again in repelling the United attack.
CB – Ezequiel Garay, Benfica
The Chelsea and Manchester United target put in another faultless display as the Portuguese side held firm for a 1-0 win over Bordeaux.
LB – Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs’ attacking game is much easier when the Cameroonian is covering for them and joining in with late surges – was brilliant.
CM – Luka Modric, Real Madrid
Simply put, he changed the game for Jose Mourinho’s team and scored a magnificent equaliser.
CM – Ogyeni Onazi, Lazio
Got on the scoresheet and dominated throughout from the centre of midfield.
LM – Gareth Bale, Tottenham Hotspur
The Welsh wing wizard isn’t exactly a left midfielder anymore but he is for this team. Another goal, another assist, another peerless display.
RM - Mario Götze, Borussia Dortmund
.The diminutive German playmaker was a class apart throughout, scoring a cute goal
CF – Danny Welbeck, Manchester United
Worked tirelessly throughout and did not deserve to be on the losing side.
CF – Gonzalo Higuain, Real Madrid
Made the crucial cross to set up Cristiano Ronaldo’s winner and was dangerous all night.
