Liverpool striker Luis Suarez believes that defeating Tottenham Hotspur in their next league game on Sunday is crucial to their top-four prospects.
The Merseyside club will play host to Andre Villas Boas’ troops in what promises to be a crucial fixture in the race for the Champions League spots.Spurs currently hold third place in the Premier League’s pecking order, two and seven points ahead of London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.
Liverpool, on the other hand, occupy the seventh place and trail Tottenham by an enormous 12-point margin. However, the Reds can gain ground on city rivals Everton who are just three points ahead of them at sixth place, with a Merseyside derby at Anfield still left to be played in May.
Many have already ruled out Liverpool’s chances of earning Champions League football, but Suarez thinks that a win on Sunday will bring them right back in the contest.
The 25-year-old striker said that his side could make use of their recent sublime form to halt Tottenham’s remarkable charge in the league, which has seen them go unbeaten in their last 12 matches.
The Uruguayan international said: “We've been in good form recently and it's a good opportunity to reduce the gap between ourselves and Spurs.
“There is a slight chance we can make Champions League football - and if we want to do that, this is the sort of game we need to win.
Suarez, who is currently the leading goal scorer in the Premier League with 21 goals, could reach another milestone in his impressive Liverpool career on Sunday. The Anfield hot-shot is just one goal short of taking his Liverpool goal tally to 50.
He summed up his success at the club by saying: “You have to work hard as a striker to get into the right positions and anticipate situations - that's important, too.
“It's also evidence the team are working well and moving in the right direction as a whole - but at the same time, it is nice as a player to receive personal recognition because it means you're doing a good job."
The match on Sunday will witness two of the best players in England – Suarez and Gareth Bale – go against each other. Both the players have been in sparkling form and are frontrunners to claim the PFA Player of the Year award for this season.
