Artur Boruc was the hero for Southampton as his last-minute penalty save saw them take a point away from their visit to Carrow Road.
The game was still locked at 0-0 when Mark Clattenburg awarded the kick, which saw Boruc push away Grant Holt’s effort after the striker was fouled in controversial fashion.
The hosts, who had struggled to get into their flow all afternoon, saw the chance to snatch victory when the penalty was awarded for Luke Shaw’s foul on the striker. The Saints were furious at the decision but their Polish stopper saved the day as he sprung to his right to deny Holt in what was Norwich’s first penalty of the season.
Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino will feel aggrieved that his side travel back to the South Coast with just a point as they took charge early on and saw chances from Adam Lallana, Gaston Ramirez and Luke Shaw all saved by Mark Bunn.
Norwich came into the game as the half wore on, and Robert Snodgrass saw his free-kick spilt away by Boruc in slippery conditions before Holt had a penalty shout turned down when Shaw pulled him back in the area.
As the conditions worsened the play became scrappy but Snodgrass had a good chance to put the home side ahead as he rounded Boruc, only for Maya Yoshida to race back and clear.
With Southampton on top, Rickie Lambert could not control his rebound from a Jay Rodriguez effort and Norwich looked to counter at every opportunity. Holt saw his cross skip past strike partner Kei Kamara before Yoshida again cut out a Snodgrass pull-back. Rodriguez thought he had wasted the last opening of the game when his tame volley was saved by Bunn, but the best chance to win the game was yet to come.
Sebastian Bassong’s long-ball forwarded evaded everybody and Norwich skipper Holt was caught by Shaw as they raced to the ball. Following consultation with his assistant, Clattenburg awarded Norwich a penalty which left Holt with the weight of a sell-out crowd on his shoulders as he stepped up.
The pressure seemed to tell though as Boruc was able to make a magnificent save to hold on to what could be a priceless point for the Saints in their bid for survival.
