Manchester United & Chelsea wait on FA Cup replay date

Published Add your comment

After Chelsea recovered from a two-goal defecit to draw 2-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, the Football Association have no option but to wait before announcing a date for the quarter-final replay between the two sides.

Defeat in the Europa League for Chelsea against Steaua Bucharest on Thursday night would allow the FA to schedule the match in the first week of April, and the Blues are a goal behind following the first-leg in Romania.

But, should the Blues win, a fixture pile-up would be caused and a subsequent headache begins for the FA ahead of the semi-final between the winner and Manchester City.

An international break, which runs from 18-27 March, is the major stumbling block for the association, and it would be impractical for the FA to cancel this weekend's Premier League matches for the two teams.

Chelsea would have to play their Europa League quarter-final midweek, before the FA Cup semi-final which is penciled in for the weekend of 13-14 April.

Sir Alex Ferguson at least saw the funny side, and is quoted by the BBC as saying: "I don't know when the replay will be played, probably May."
