Sir Bobby Charlton wants Cristiano Ronaldo back at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has fuelled speculation about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo as a Real Madrid player, by admitting he wants to see the Portuguese return to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's future has been the subject of conjecture all season with reports of a contract wrangle at the Santiago Bernabeu, and a summer transfer back to Manchester United has been suggested as a possibility for the 27-year-old.

Sir Alex Ferguson has, however, conceded that it is unlikely Manchester United will re-sign Ronaldo anytime soon as the Portugal captain has two years to run on his current deal with Real Madrid, but Charlton retains a hope that a dream reunion could happen in the future.

"Any great player would be welcomed back but Cristiano went beyond being just a great player," Charlton told reporters at the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards.

“He scores phenomenal goals, loves the club and was just the right sort of player at Manchester United. I’m a fan of him like anyone else and on a personal level I would like to see him back. I can’t say anything more than that."

Reports in the weekend press claimed Manchester United are ready to meet with Nike to discuss how the two can work together to bring Ronaldo, the top client of the sportswear giant, back to the club at the end of the season.

Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno, however, insists Ronaldo will not be leaving Real Madrid, despite the apparent interest from the club where he made his name.
